Android Won't Turn On

Android Won’t Turn On? The Real Solutions!

Android phones are very useful for helping you stay in touch with friends and family…if they can be turned on! This can be a very troublesome problem considering the investment that you made on your phone, but don't worry, we're here to help. In what follows, we'll walk you through what you need to do if your Android device won't turn on!

Charge Your Android Phone

It's possible that the battery may be completely discharged or dead. Try plugging the device in for a little while and then try to power it on again. Keep in mind that batteries that are completely drained will take longer to charge.

Even when turned off, smartphone batteries discharge slowly. If your Android phone has been off for an extended period of time, it may not turn on again before charging it. Press and hold the power button after you've charged it to see if it will turn on again.

Check Your Charging Cable

Its possible that your charging cable isn't compatible or is broken. Try using a different cable that's compatible with your device and a different wall adapter to see if this is the source of the problem.

Soft Reset

It's possible a software crash may be preventing the phone from booting normally. Force restarting or soft resetting the device can help the phone refresh without impacting your data.

Press and hold the power button and the volume down button for 10 to 20 seconds. If successful, your phone should reboot and turn on again.

Recovery Mode

This is a last resort that can help your Android device turn on again. It's unlikely that you'll be able to back up your data before trying this, as you presumably can't turn on the device, but it's always recommended that you back up your data before using recovery mode.

Recovery mode can reboot the phone normally or perform a factory reset on the device. A factory reset is the true final solution to this problem if you can't get the phone to turn on, but let's start with trying to boot the phone normally from recovery mode.

Starting Recovery Mode

This process varies from device to device, but try holding your power button and volume down button at the same time. You may also need to hold an additional hardware button like the volume up key, the home key, or a unique button for your device like the Bixby key on Samsung phones.

When recovery mode starts, you should see a black screen and some options. Use your volume buttons to navigate the options and select the one you want. First, try booting the phone normally.

Factory Reset

If this fails to turn on your Android phone normally, you can try and perform a factory reset in recovery mode. Keep in mind that this will delete all the data you had stored on the device, and it will reset to the way that the phone was when you received it. Just select the option from the list in recovery mode, and when prompted, tap reboot system now.

Hardware Problems

If none of these solutions work, its entirely possible that there may be an internal hardware problem with your phone. A common problem that might be causing your Android phone to not turn on is that your battery may be defective or old. Consider having your battery replaced by a professional.

If your phone is old, it may be time to upgrade! Take a look at our cell phone comparison tool to find the deal that's right for you.
