Samsung Galaxy Won’t Fast Charge? Here’s The Fix!

The latest Samsung Galaxy smartphones have an amazing feature called fast charging. However, when plug your phone in, it seems to be charging slower than expected. What's going on, and why won't your Samsung Galaxy fast charge? In this article, you'll learn the truth about fast charging, what you can do to get your phone charging quickly, and tips to help take care of your phone's battery health!

Samsung Galaxy Phones And Fast Charging

The Samsung Galaxy line of smartphones has been a major contender in the cell phone market since 2009. As time went on, Samsung's flagship Galaxy S series became direct competitors to Apple's iPhones. One of the ways that Samsung's flagships were able to compete was through adding valuable features, such as wireless charging, advanced cameras, and fast charging.

How Does Fast Charging Work?

Fast charging works just like it sounds. The latest version of this technology, Super Fast Charging, can charge the Samsung Galaxy S20 5G series. It uses 25 watts to charge your phone at a higher rate than almost any other smartphone.

For smartphone manufacturers to achieve fast charging, they need to strike a balance between two extremes: heat and charging rate. If the charging rate uses too many watts, the phone could overheat and even catch fire. If the charging rate is too low, it's not exactly fast charging, is it?

Lithium-Ion battery technology has improved to the point where higher charging rates can be supported without overheating your device. Combined with a powerful enough adapter, cable, and battery, fast charging can get your phone at a significant charge in less than an hour.

How To Fast Charge Your Samsung Galaxy

To get your Samsung Galaxy to fast charge, make sure you have the following:

  • An adapter with a high enough wattage to support fast charging
  • Fast charging is turned on in your settings
  • Make sure that the cable that you're using can support the power
  • Make sure that the cable and adapter aren't broken
  • Ensure that the power source is high enough to support fast charging

From here on, we'll talk about what you can do if your Samsung Galaxy won't fast charge. We'll also talk about adaptive fast charging and battery health, so you can keep your device running well in the long term.

Make Sure Fast Charging Is Enabled On Your Samsung Galaxy

You'll have to enable fast charging in your settings before you can use this feature. Fortunately, the process is very easy. Follow the steps below, depending on what version of Android your Samsung Galaxy is running.

If you're not sure what version of Android you're using, open your settings and slide down to About phone -> Software information. Then, find the Android version to see if you're running Android 9 or 10.

Turn On Samsung Galaxy Fast Charging For Android 9 (Pie)

On Android 9.0 (Pie), you can enable fast charging on compatible Samsung Galaxy devices. To do so, swipe down from the top of your screen and tap the gear icon to get into your Settings. From here, tap Device care -> Battery and then hit the three dots in the top right corner. This will give you the option to select your Settings.

From this menu, toward the bottom of the list, you'll see options for fast cable charging and fast wireless charging. Make sure that they're both toggled on.

Turn On Samsung Galaxy Fast Charging For Android 10 (Q)

If your Samsung Galaxy is running on Android 10 (Q), the steps are similar. Go to your Settings -> Device Care -> Battery -> Charging -> and then make sure that fast charging, Super Fast charging, and Fast wireless charging are all toggled on.

Make Sure Your Adapter Or Wireless Charger Supports The Right Wattage

For fast charging to work on your Samsung Galaxy, you'll need to make sure that your charging adapter or wireless charging pad supports a high enough wattage. To use Super Fast Charging on phones like the Samsung Galaxy S20 5G, you'll need an adapter with a rating of 45W.

If you're sure that your adapter has a high enough wattage, it's possible that it might be broken. If your adapter is broken or you need a new one, we recommend Samsung's 45 W charging wall adapter. Samsung's chargers are made with your Samsung Galaxy in mind, so you won't have to worry about compatibility.

If you're looking for a fast-wireless charger, we recommend this charging pad from Samsung. You'll be able to charge all sorts of different devices, as long as they use the Qi standard.

Check Your Charging Cable

If your charging cable is damaged, your Samsung Galaxy won't fast charge as expected. Try getting a new cable, and make sure that it can support the right wattage. Some cables don't have high enough capacity for heavy-duty fast charging.

If your cable is damaged or you need a new one, we recommend these 100 W USB-C charging cables from Amazon. They should be more than up to the task, alongside a compatible power adapter or fast wireless charger.

Is Your Power Source Strong Enough?

If the power coming from the wall socket, battery pack, or other power source isn't strong enough, then your phone won't be able to draw power at the right rate to support fast charging. To get fast charging to work on your Samsung Galaxy device, make sure that your power source has the right wattage.

For example, if you're trying to charge your phone through a USB port on the side of your laptop, there's a good chance that it can't draw enough power to support fast charging. In fact, the wattage might be so low that your phone could lose charge while plugged in!

Is Wireless Charging Slower Than Wired Charging?

Yes, wireless charging is slower than wired charging. You've probably noticed this, if you've used both methods. Wireless charging can't flow into the phone quite as fast as it does through a wire.

An Example Of Adaptive Fast Charging

I use a Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which has a beefy 4,000 mAh battery. Charging my phone would take a long time, if it weren't for fast charging. Like many others, I like to charge my phone before I go to bed.

However, my phone is smart and aware of my usage. It knows that I tend not to use my phone between 11:00 PM and 8:00 AM. So, because of this, there's no need to charge my phone at a super high rate. Between those times, my phone actually charges slower to preserve my battery's long-term health.

However, if I need a quick boost during the day, plugging my phone in will let it charge at high speed. The best part about this is that you don't have to change any settings for this to work: your phone does it automatically!

Why Fast Charging May Not Work: Battery Health

It's possible that fast charging may not work right if your battery is too old or if it has suffered some damage. Sometimes, dropping your phone against a solid surface, even if there isn't any exterior damage to the device, can damage the lithium-ion battery.

Over time, lithium-ion batteries can develop crystalline growths called dendrites which impede power flow and grow inside the battery. Eventually, if enough dendrites form, the battery can become completely inoperable or even catch fire. If your battery isn't in decent shape, it's possible that the software may not allow fast charging to protect you and your device.

Speaking of battery health, how is your Samsung Galaxy's battery doing? Adaptive fast charging might prolong the long-term health of your battery, but it won't make it last forever. If your battery is suffering, you should check out our article on Android battery life saving tips.

Should I Replace My Battery Or Get A New Phone?

If your phone is more than three or four years old, it might be time to replace your battery. However, it might be more economical in the long run to get a new device with better hardware and software.

Buying new parts for an old phone can work, but over time, parts can become difficult to find. You might wind up spending more to keep your old phone running than it would cost to buy a new one with better software.

UpPhone's cell phone comparison tool is one of the best ways to find a new cell phone that fits your unique needs. You can search between a range of prices, look for phones from certain manufacturers, and search by specs like internal storage capacity.

Samsung Galaxy: Fast Charging

Turning on fast charging in the Settings, using the right adapters, cables, and power sources can be tricky. However, once you get the right tools and configure your phone, you can enjoy charging your phone faster than you can say “Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G.”
