One of the most common issues people encounter with their smartphones is when they just won't power on. When we rely on our cell phones to assist with so many aspects of our daily life, it can be extremely frustrating to find that we suddenly can't use it for anything. If your Google Pixel 5 won't turn on, I'll show you everything you can try to get it working today!
Try Charging Your Pixel 5
Some of you may have already tried this, but a great place to start troubleshooting is to make sure that your Pixel 5 is charged. If your cell phone's run out of battery, no amount of button pressing will get it to turn on. Even if you try charging your Pixel 5 and it still won't turn on, you can at least rule out that battery life was not the problem.
It might help to switch up the kind of charger you use to power up your phone. If you usually charge directly into a wall's power outlet, try plugging into your car charger or a computer's USB port. Sometimes a smartphone that's run out of battery will react better to one type of power source than another.
Force Restart Your Pixel 5
If your phone's experiencing a software crash, restarting the device might get rid of any glitches keeping it from working properly. Sometimes, when a smartphone crashes, its screen will appear as black and won't respond to touch, but the device itself will still technically be powered on. If you can force a restart on your Pixel 5, it's likely this was the error your phone was experiencing.
How To Force Restart The Pixel 5
Press and hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time. Continue holding both buttons down for a minimum of 7 seconds, soon your Pixel 5 should restart.
If your phone starts working after the force restart, you may not have completely resolved the issue it's experienced. When a smartphone, especially one as recent at the Google Pixel 5, is working properly, it won't just crash out of the blue. Backup Your Google Pixel 5
Before moving on to any of the following steps, we recommend backing up your Google Pixel 5 externally if you can. Backing up now will allow you to preserve any of the important data you've saved on your device, just in case the error worsens and your phone's software crashes completely somewhere in the repair process.
Every Google Pixel model comes with an automatic backup feature. This allows the essential data on your phone, such as contacts, messages, pictures and video, to be saved to your Google account automatically. Without this feature turned on, all data that's been automatically backed up will be deleted from your Google account and will require you to manually save them if you would like an external backup.
To make sure all of the files you want preserved get backed up externally, you can upload them directly from your phone to Google Drive. Open Google Drive on your Pixel 5, and press the Add icon, which appears as a small plus sign. Tap Upload, followed by Upload Files. You'll then be able to select every file you'd like saved to your Drive, where you'll be able to access them as you need should your phone be out of commission.
Factory Restore Your Google Pixel 5
If you want to be completely sure whether a problem occurring with your Pixel 5's software's the reason that your device won't turn on, you'll need to perform a factory restore. The factory restore process will completely erase your personal data from the phone, so you'll want to make sure you've backed up all the files you need before beginning.
Although, you probably won't be able to do this step if your Pixel 5 won't turn on at all. If you can at least get it turned on for a little while, you can try these steps.
Plug In Your Pixel 5
First, plug your Pixel 5 into a charger and make sure it's connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data. If your phone runs out of battery or can't connect to a network during the restore, you might not be able to log back into it after the restore's complete.
Factory Reset In Settings
Once you're plugged into a power source, open Settings. Tap System, followed by Advanced. Select Reset options, then choose Erase all data (factory reset). After opting for the factory reset, select the Reset phone option, and enter your security code, PIN or pattern if you have one.
Completing A Factory Reset
Select Erase everything to make sure all of your personal data gets removed from the device, as this may also eliminate any bugs in the software preventing your Pixel 5 from turning on. Finally, Restart your phone when given the option. When your Pixel 5 turns back on, log into your Google account. By logging in, all the data you've backed up should once again be accessible on your device.
