Are you switching wireless carriers soon? Would you like to bring your current iPhone with you when you switch? You'll first want check to see if you're in possession of a locked or unlocked phone. Today, I'll explain the difference between locked phones and unlocked phones, how to check if your iPhone is locked, and what to do if it is.
How To Check If Your iPhone Is Carrier Locked
Before making any decisions about switching carriers, you'll want to know if you possess a locked or unlocked phone. To find out, follow these steps:
- Navigate to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select About.
- Scroll down, and tap Carrier Lock.
If you see the words No SIM Restriction in the Carrier Lock page, you own an unlocked iPhone. If you see a carrier name listed on this page, your iPhone is locked.
Locked vs. Unlocked Phones
Locked and unlocked phones differ in a few ways. A locked phone is sold by a wireless carrier, and it only works with that wireless carrier's network. If you love your wireless carrier and don't plan on switching anytime soon, a locked phone is great. It's also important to note that these phones usually cost less.
On the other hand, unlocked phones connect to any wireless carrier's network. If you decide to switch carriers, there are no contracts barring you from bringing your phone with you. For that reason, these phones tend to be more expensive and easier to resell than locked devices.
What To Do If Your Phone Is Locked
If you would like to unlock your locked iPhone, contact your wireless carrier. They may unlock your phone for you. However, it's possible you will have to pay for the cost of the phone before they agree to unlock it.
Similarly, you may need to be a customer with that carrier for a particular amount of time before they'll unlock your device. With that in mind, it never hurts to ask and see what your options are.
