What Is Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program?
Apple's program is essentially an installment plan combined with an early upgrade program. It spreads payments for the new phone over 24 months. At the end of those 24 months, you own the phone.
Customers can upgrade for free after 12 payments. If you choose to upgrade, you're required to trade in your old phone, which then starts the leasing cycle all over again. The cost of your iPhone varies depending on which model select.
When Can I Upgrade?
You can technically upgrade at any time. Even if you haven't had your iPhone for 12 months, you can still upgrade, but you'll have to make 12 month's worth of payments towards your iPhone.
After 12 months, you can upgrade to the newest iPhone for free, but your loan starts over again for the new device. You are also required to return your old iPhone to Apple.
The old iPhone must meet certain standards to be turned in. In addition to powering on and holding a charge, your old iPhone must have a functioning and uncracked display.

Choose Your Level Of AppleCare+ Coverage
The Apple iPhone Upgrade Program comes with the added benefit of built in AppleCare+ coverage. When you sign up for the iPhone Upgrade Program, you get to decide between standard AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs a little extra (starting around an extra $4 / month).
Provide Your Current Carrier Details

Once approved for the program, you can pick up your new iPhone. If ordered online, your new device can be picked up at your nearest Apple store. They'll hold it there for fourteen days before returning it to stock.
