A lot of people are planning on gifting an iPhone 12 this holiday season. Before you do, there's something you should know — the iPhone 12 doesn't come with a charger. In this article, I'll explain why Apple made this decision and tell you about a couple accessories you'll probably need if you want to use an iPhone 12.
What Apple Said
When Apple told the world that the iPhone 12 wouldn't come with a charger, their reasons included: saving the environment, reducing carbon emissions, and limiting the “mining and use of precious materials.” Apple also argued that more than 2 billion power adapters already exist in the hands of consumers.
What they didn't tell you is that the power adapters that you have in your home, or the chargers that work for other iPhone models, don't work with the new iPhone 12 charging cable. The iPhone 12 line use a USB-C power adapter. The only other models to come with a compatible charger (a USB-C) are the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
It's important to note that you can charge an iPhone 12 with your existing charger and cable. However, if you want to use the new cable that accompanies your new phone, you'll have to buy the USB-C adapter.
What Apple Didn't Say
It's pretty obvious that money was a primary factor in Apple's decision to eliminate the charger from the iPhone 12 package. It's no secret that Apple wants to make as much money as possible. This means cutting costs and getting you to purchase additional accessories from Apple directly.
You can save a little bit of money by going to Amazon to purchase a USB-C wall charger that works with your iPhone 12 cable. Aukey sells a compatible wall charger for less than $13. Apple's costs $19.
What Apple Should Have Done
When Apple eliminated the headphone jack in the iPhone X, it came with a dongle. This dongle allowed you to still use your old headphones. Apple could have done something similar with the iPhone 12.
Apple should've included a USB-C female to USB male adapter in every iPhone 12 box. Doing so wouldn't have required making the box any bigger, but Apple would've had to pay a few cents for each adapter.
