You're spending a night out on the town with friends, and you want to take a picture together. Unfortunately, it's too dark for your phone's camera to take high-quality photos. This is a frustrating situation, especially because it might cost you some great memories. Luckily, iPhone Night Mode can solve the problem! In this article, I'll explain what Night Mode is on your iPhone.
What Is Night Mode?
iPhone Night Mode works by taking in as much light as possible from the background environment to lighten photos taken in darker lighting.
Night Mode is different than increasing the brightness setting. The shutter stays open longer to take in the supplemental light.
Simultaneously, the camera captures a multitude of angles to identify details that need sharpening, such as faces. The software analyzes every angle that's caught and constructs a single photo from them.
Which iPhones Support Night Mode?
The following iPhones support Night Mode:
It's enabled by default, which means it's automatically operating on your device. Additionally, the iPhone 12 line supports Night Mode with the Selfie camera and time-lapse videos.
Night Mode was one of the many great new features first introduced at Apple's 2019 event. The event lasted to hours, but you can check out our five-minute Apple Event recap video if you want to save yourself some time!
Night Mode Features On Other Phones
Although Apple's Night Mode is exclusive to newer iPhones, it's not exclusive to all phones in general. There are several different phones that also offer features similar to Apple's Night Mode. Here are some examples:
Samsung Galaxy Phones
Several Samsung Galaxy phones support Night mode. These phones include the Galaxy Note10, Note20, S10 Plus, and S20. This setting can be manually turned on or off in the Camera app menu.
Compared with photos taken without it, Night Mode on Samsung Galaxy phones reduces the noise from a dark environment in order to define photos' details. It also fine-tunes colors and other image features and qualities. This process makes shots that are low-light more pronounced.
Google Pixel Series
Every Google Pixel since the Pixel 3 supports Night Sight, their version of Night Mode. This feature allows you to take better low-light pictures without an unnatural flash, so you can capture a clearer photo. Both the front- and rear-facing cameras on the Pixel 3 and 3a have Night Sight.
Night Sight takes up to 15 frames simultaneously. It can include some longer exposures to capture shadow detail, which means you'll need to hold the phone steady for a few seconds once you press the shutter.
The Pixel's camera uses machine learning to decide the right color, white balance, and lighting formulated on the photo's components. If the camera's gyroscope (a device that's used to measure or sustain positioning and alignment) detects a significant amount of motion blur, it will decrease its shutter speed to lessen the blur.
